What is Tapestry Segmentation?
Esri's proprietary classification system that groups U.S. households into 67 distinct lifestyle segments.
Definition
Tapestry Segmentation is a market segmentation system developed by Esri that classifies every U.S. neighborhood into one of 67 distinct lifestyle segments organized into 14 LifeMode groups. Each segment is defined by a unique combination of demographic, socioeconomic, and behavioral characteristics. Tapestry goes far beyond traditional demographics by incorporating consumer spending patterns, media preferences, technology adoption, and lifestyle choices. In CRE site selection, Tapestry data is used to assess market fit — whether the people living in a trade area match the profile of a concept's target customer. Successful multi-unit operators build 'Tapestry profiles' of their best-performing locations and then seek new trade areas with similar segment compositions. Tapestry data is available through Esri Business Analyst and is integrated into platforms like Slant for automated trade area analysis.
Example
A boutique fitness brand identifies that 80% of its top-performing studios are in trade areas dominated by 'Bright Young Professionals' and 'Metro Renters' Tapestry segments, then targets new markets with similar compositions.
